Please join us this coming Tuesday for a rare chance to see Charlie is My Darling.
This legendary film premiered at the Mannheim Film Festival in 1966 and only received
brief screenings in Europe during that same year - to date, only low-quality VHS
bootleg copies have surfaced en masse. So please come and enjoy this film as it
was meant to be seen: on 16mm. Each screening will last approximately 60 minutes.
More about Charlie is My Darling
Filmed over three days in Dublin and Belfast, Charlie is My Darling, directed
by Peter Whitehead, is an astounding "fly on the wall" look at the Rolling
Stones. It stands alongside D.A. Pennebaker's Don't Look Back as pioneering
60's cinéma
vérité rockumentary.
By turns funny, touching, exciting & revealing, Whitehead manages to create
an astonishing level of intimacy with the world's premier rock band, which would be unthinkable
these days. The film captures the boys in all their pristine rock 'n roll glory
soon after the release of their first big single in America "(I Can't Get No)
Satisfaction." The film also acts as a sort of social history of Ireland in
the evocative detail of a vanished era. The occasional melancholy tone is one of
the idiosyncratic touches that sets the film apart from any other pop documentaries.
