Josephine Taylor (American)
Part of the New Acquisitions and Highlights exhibit
atrium gallery
Known for lavish and fascinating portraiture, Josephine Taylor both pleases and
astonishes the viewer. These abundant images seem to be taken from a dream or mental
imprint; one is immersed in a personal memory that hints at an internal history.
The effect of the work is gradual, at first one is enticed to view the works up
close on a personal level – but upon engaging them, one sees the contrast of tender
artistic craft and visceral weight.
Josephine Taylor has had numerous exhibitions including You Put This Animal in Me
at the Catherine Clark Galley and was the recipient of the prestigious 2004 SECA
Art Award in San Franciso. Her works are in private collections of MoMA in New York
and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
